European Union

Finland is one of the member states of the European Union. The European Union (EU) is a political union to which almost all the countries in Europe belong. The purpose of the European Union is to create common rules that all countries follow. The common rules make trade between European countries easier. There are no customs duties between EU member states. It means that the buyer or the seller does not have to make any payments when the goods cross a border. In the same way, EU citizens do not always have to get a visa to go to another EU member state.

On this website, we will explain how the European Parliament works. We will also discuss how the decisions made by the European Union affect the lives of people living in Finland. Every citizen of Finland is at the same time a citizen of the European Union. The EU citizens choose the people who represent them in the European Parliament. Elections to the European Parliament are held every five yearsto choose people who will make decisions on the affairs of the European Union. The next elections will be held in 2014.
