Citizens’ initiative
When the citizens in the various member states find it important to make changes or fix something, they can make a citizens’ initiative. It takes one million people to sign a citizens’ initiative. Supporters for the initiative must be found from at least one quarter (¼) of the EU member states. The supporters must be gathered during one year. The citizens’ initiative is presented to the European Commission. The initiative obligates the Commission to make a proposal for a new law on the issue concerned. If the initiative meets the requirements, the people making the initiative may take part in the parliamentary hearing.
